THE NEIGHBOR ROLE AND NEIGHBORING IN A HIGHLY URBAN AREA

PETER MICHAEL MCGAHAN, Fordham University

Abstract

An underlying premise of this research is that understanding the urban neighborhood is a prerequisite for understanding urban social organization. It was expected that an examination of the nature and determinants of urban neighborhood structure would yield significant information concerning: (a) the manner in which the individual is integrated into the urban community; (b) the kinds of informal participation patterns that exist among urban residents; and (c) the extent to which a locally-based normative order exists in a city.
