COMPARISON OF TIGHTLY STRUCTURED AND LOOSELY STRUCTURED TRAINING PROGRAMS ON BLACK SKIN CARE FOR NURSES
Instructional outcomes of the Black Skin Care Curriculum, a tightly structured hierarchical approach, and the Integumentary System Curriculum, a loosely structured hierarchical approach, based on Gagne's and Bloom's instructional theories, respectively, were compared. The investigator designed modules, pretests, and posttests assessed the gain scores of both treatments. Two-way analysis of variance of gain scores tested the hypotheses: (1) There is no significant difference between the gain scores on the Gaskin Test between nurses who are taught a program based on a tightly structured hierarchical approach and a loosely structured hierarchical approach; (2) There is no significant difference between the gain scores on the Gaskin Test of preservice and inservice nurses who are taught either training approach; and (3) There is no significant interaction between training treatment (tightly structured hierarchical and loosely structured hierarchical) and degree of nurses' professional training (preservice and inservice).^ Subjects were divided into 60 preservice nurses enrolled in an associate degree nursing program and 60 inservice nurses employed by a hospital. Placement of the preservice nurses took place through random selection of preservice nurses participating in extant courses within the college; inservice nurses were selected by the Director of Nursing Education.^ In conclusion: (1) No significant difference between mean gain scores of the two treatment groups across both levels of nurses were reported. Increased scores on the posttest compared to the pretest scores for both treatment groups were reported. Positive effects on preservice and inservice nurses related to the learning units on the black skin, regardless of the method of teaching were apparent; (2) Preservice nurses benefitted more from instruction, regardless of the type or training treatment, than inservice nurses; and (3) Preservice nurses who received the tightly structured hierarchical training benefitted more than preservice nurses who received the loosely structured hierarchical training. Preservice nurses needed and profited from the Gagnean approach. ^
