Founded in 1971, the Center for Medieval Studies promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the middle ages in order to enhance understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage of this essential period; we also aim to provide a community of scholarship for those interested in the middle ages. The Center’s interdisciplinary focus is evident in the curriculum requirements of its B.A., M.A. and Doctoral Certificate programs, its team-taught courses, lecture series, conferences, symposia, websites, publications, and in its success training graduate students who have gone on to more advanced degree programs in different disciplines. The emphases on intellectual diversity, depth of study, and rigorous scholarship that underlie the Center’s degree and outreach programs resonate strongly with Fordham's Jesuit tradition and institutional goals, particularly with its dedication to teaching and to close student-faculty interaction, its devotion to scholarship and ethical values, and its stress on critical thinking and communication.
