Abstract

Public education in the United States has been designed to serve the needs of children drawn from every level of society and possessed of every degree of intel- lectual talent. For this reason the modern educational enterprise has always ineluded a concern for vocationsi training as well as for the usual academic disciplines. This concern may find expression either through the regulaz school program or through the work of extension services. The present study will recount in some detail the work of one such extension service, that of the Vocational Educa- tion and Extension Board in Rockland County, New York. Before turning to the work of the Board itself some under- standing of the locality in which it has operated will be useful.
