Whitehead's theory of inheritance

Elizabeth Karen Sonnier, Fordham University

Abstract

Examines the problem of inheritance in Whitehead's process organicism, explaining how the past is given in the present without a material substrate onto which the past is stored. Proposes that inheritance is enabled through the projection into the present of strains of the past. Strain projection is shown to be based on the tenets of projective geometry and intimately related to Whitehead's topological analysis of extensive connection.
