How does the role of the assistant principal impact students' learning outcomes

Caterina Di Tillio, Fordham University

Abstract

In the last twenty years, much attention has been paid to educational leadership and its impact on student achievement. However, there is a lack of empirical data on the impact of the role of the Assistant Principal. This quantitative study explored assistant principals’ perceptions about their relationships with the principal and other key members of the school community, as well as their sense of job satisfaction, efficacy, and aspirations to move into the principalship. The research also explored whether there is a relationship between the assistant principal’s role, and responsibilities and test scores. The researcher found that there is no significant relationship between test scores and the role of the assistant principal. While the assistant principals were content with their roles and responsibilities, these positive perceptions did not translate into higher aspirations towards the principalship.
