'ENTELECHIA' AND 'ENERGEIA' IN ARISTOTLE
Abstract
One reading Aristotle in translation is not aware of certain peculiarities in his language that become glaring as soon as the Greek is consulted. Perhaps one of the most puzzling of these is the fact that two words are used for act in his theory of act and potency: Éνéργéla (which the Oxford translation renders sometimes as actuality , sometimes as activity) 1 and Éντéλéχéla (translated as actuality , fulfillment, or complete reality). 2
